SUMMER LUSCIOUSNESS
Symphonic Style

San Diego, CA (July 9, 2012) – Lusciousness looms over the summer horizon on July 15 as zombie, superhero, and alien Comic-Conites flee and San Diego Symphony members return to invade the inner space of Anthology supper club.

Prepare to be teleported to the depths of euphoria by the classical hits of Barber, Sibelius, Mendelssohn, and Ginastera. Then warp speed ahead for the short film “Light Is Calling” by Bill Morrison, with a live performance by bassist Jory Herman; music by Michael Gordon.

Other music selections include…..

…….. Samuel Barber’s final opus “Canzonetta” – first performed in 1981 by the New York Philharmonic with conductor Zubin Mehta. The slow movement for oboe and string orchestra was left unfinished at the time of Barber’s passing in 1981.

……… Jean Sibelius’ “Canzonetta” from the music to Arvid Järnefelt’s dramatic play “Kuolema;” arranged by Igor Stravinsky.

……….“Andante Festivo” for strings. Completed in 1938, the arrangement was first performed via radio broadcast in 1939 by The Radio Orchestra with composer Jean Sibelius conducting. During the 1930s, Sibelius listened to the radio extensively and observed deficiencies in loudspeaker quality; which led to Sibelius’ inspiration to compose differently for the radio than for live concerts.

……….The Neoclassical “Duo for Flute and Oboe,” written in 1945 by Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera; considered one of the most important Latin American classical composers.

……….Felix Mendelssohn’s “String Symphony No. 9” in C Minor.

……..the 1935 film “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with James Cagney, Dick Powell, and Olivia Mary de Havilland.

……. Woody Allen’s 1982 film based on Ingmar Bergman’s “Smiles of a Summer’s Night” and Jean Renoir’s “Rules of the Game” — “A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy” featuring Mia Farrow, José Ferrer, Tony Roberts, Julie Hagerty, and Mary Steenburgen.
