The Civil Wars

Americana

The minimalist pop folk duo, The Civil Wars, tour without a backing band – letting each song ring out free of any extraneous sound. In 2008, Joy Williams and John Paul White formed the band in East Nashville and, after their first show, producer Charlie Peacock asked to produce them in his studio.

The band received national attention when their single “Poison & Wine” was featured on Grey’s Anatomy. Two days later, the band released their EP, which debuted at No. 4 on the iTunes charts and subsequently won iTunes’s “Best of 2010” singer/songwriter album.

Just before The Civil Wars’ “Barton Hollow” was released, they were selected as Paste Magazine’s “Best of What’s Next” and they appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. The album reached number 1 on iTunes and the Billboard Digital Album charts.

“With care and delicacy, they curate their notes, stitching together a sound that’s sharp, arch and almost achingly fine.”” – – Jim Farber
