ROBERT GLASPER says that he first developed his sound playing piano in church, which would explain his unique approach to jazz and his one of a kind sound. Glasper grew up in Houston, TX, and then went on to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. It was there that he met neo-soul vocalist, Bilal, and the two quickly began collaborating together. He has not only worked with Bilal, but Mos Def, Q-Tip, Kanye West, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jay-Z, and more.
In 2004, Glasper released his debut album, Mood, with Fresh Sound New Talent. In 2005, he released his first major label debut, Canvas, on Blue Note Records. The album is a great melding of styles.
Glasper’s diverse talents have taken him several directions, and he is the leader of both an acoustic ensemble, The Robert Glasper Trio, as well as the electronic hip-hop oriented Robert Glasper Experiement.
In 2009, Glasper released his third album, Double Booked. The album is divided and features songs performed by both Glasper’s acoustic trio as well as his electric band. There are several funk influenced tracks, as well as guest appearances by Bilal and Questlove.
