Sara Watkins

of Nickel Creek w/ Noah Gundersen

Singer / Songwriter

SARA WATKINS is back to focusing on her solo efforts after eighteen years with Nickel Creek and a year-long stint with The Decemberists. The Carlsbad based singer-songwriter and fiddle player hinted at her desire to explore solo projects for years, and in 2009, she released her self-titled debut album on Nonesuch Records.

In 1999, Watkins made her debut as the fiddler for Nickel Creek, a progressive bluegrass group who released six albums and received one Grammy Award. Nickel Creek was comprised of Sara Watkins (fiddle), her brother Sean Watkins (guitar), and world-class mandolin player, Chris Thile. The band announced in 2007 that they would be parting ways, and in 2008, Watkins signed with Nonesuch.

Throughout 2011, Watkins lent her skills to The Decemberists on vocals and the fiddle. In September, she announced plans to release a second album in April, 2012.

“An assured debut that will undoubtedly extend her commercial reach even further, there’s an understated approach with no hints of showy grandstanding or cheap-shot appeal. Watkins’ time in the spotlight is a triumph with her agile playing and the kind of voice that gives your goose bumps the shivers.” – Sid Smith, BBC
