Nikka Costa
Funk Soul
NIKKA COSTA, the daughter of producer Don Costa, was surrounded by musicians since birth. She traveled the world with her father and, at the age of 5, recorded a single with Hawaiian singer Don Ho. This sparked the idea for a duet album with Don Costa playing guitar and the young Costa singing. The album climbed the charts and Costa quickly became a child star. At 9, Costa sang with her godfather, Frank Sinatra, on the lawn of the White House.
Costa released several pop albums throughout her teens before moving to a funk and soul sound. In 1994, she started the ‘happy funk’ band, Sugarbone, in Australia. While the band didn’t last, it gave Costa the confidence to start her solo project and, in 1996, she released Butterfly Rocket. The album took off in Australia, but Costa really took off when her song “Like A Feather” was featured in a Tommy Hilfiger ad campaign in 2000.
Everybody Got Their Something was released in 2010 and reached #120 on the Billboard charts. She subsequently toured with Lenny Kravitz and released two albums. Her newest album, PRO*WHOA!, is scheduled for release later this year.
