Funk Jazz

LEO NOCENTELLI has been known as the “funkiest, fast-fingered” guitarist there is. His experience, superior talent, musical mastery, and inimitable style has been said to control your mind, body, and soul.

Best known as the lead guitarist and composer of funk band, The Meters, Nocentelli has contributed so much to the genre that he was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with the group in 2001. Nocentelli has not only been known for his skills in the funk genre, but also in blues, jazz, hip-hop, rap, and rock. He has recorded with numerous artists such as Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, The Supremes, Sting, Paul McCartney, Maceo Parker, Mavis Staples, and many more.

The Meters have been considered by many to be the founding fathers of funk. Their signature sound lasted through the 1960’s & 1970’s, and was reborn in the late 1980’s. Their sound is a blend of funk, blues, and New Orleans vibe grooves. Their largest hits came in the 1960’s with “Sophisticated Sissy”, “Cissy Strut”, “Ease Back”, and “Look a Py Py”. All four songs reached the top 10 in the R&B charts.

Throughout the 1970’s, The Meters recorded five albums. The band played on albums by Robert Palmer, Dr. John, Lee Dorsey, and a single released by Paul McCartney and Wings. The band opened for The Rolling Stones in 1975 and 1976.

In 1993, the band separated. They reunited from 2000-2006, and then again went on hiatus. Leo Necentelli has decided to carry on their music with The Meter’s Experience.
